Turning Live News Into a Daily Habit

It's one thing to get readers to visit. It's another to get them to come back. Building a daily news habit is one of the most effective steps toward creating a reader-publisher relationship that ultimately drives subscriptions.

I explored how mobile widgets could turn live and ongoing coverage into a persistent part of a reader's day, creating repeat touchpoints with a publisher and natural pathways back to deeper journalism.

The goal: turn occasional readers into habitual ones, and habitual readers into subscribers.

The Opportunity

Push notifications are effective for breaking moments, but they're fleeting and can quickly become overwhelming. Widgets offer a different news experience; they are ambient rather than interruptive.

With that in mind, I designed a flexible system to adapt to different kinds of live coverage.

Designing Around the Event

Rather than treating every event the same, I explored how the widget could change based on what readers need in the moment.

Elections surface live results, race status and calls.
Sports prioritize scores, standings and upcoming matches.
Awards move from predictions to live winners as the event unfolds.
Breaking weather shifts from monitoring to urgent alerts and location-specific conditions.

Each experience provides enough information to be useful at a glance, with deeper reporting one tap away.

A System, Not a Template

Designing across very different events revealed a set of recurring patterns. Each experience prioritizes the information readers need most in the moment, while sharing a common approach to hierarchy, status, navigation and deeper reporting.

Small views deliver the essential news. Medium views add context. Swipes reveal additional information. And every state links back to the journalism.

Building a Habit Beyond the App

Instead of waiting for readers to open the app, these live event widgets are a new approach to news distribution.

The goal isn't simply to generate another click. By giving readers a persistent way to follow something they care about, widgets can create recurring touchpoints with a publisher throughout the day.

Over time, those users become readers, then habitual readers, then subscribers.
